The son of Alexander Ferguson, born in Scotland on May 17, 1841, and later immigrated to Channahon, Will County, Illinois, with his family as a small boy. He and his brothers William and Alexander, and his uncle John Burden, served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Daniel enlisted in the 113th Illinois Infantry.
